Online Counseling – It Works

Online Counseling – It Works

With all the concern about coronovirus and the recommendations for social distancing it can be hard to go outside for anything more than the necessities of food, work and toilet paper. Because counseling is considered a healthcare necessity, counseling centers (including The Marriage and Famiy Clinic) will not be closing down during this time. But even though it’s a healthcare necessity, some people still feel concerned about going out even for their counseling appointments. That’s where online counseling also called teletherapy comes in.

Online Counseling Works

Online counseling has been shown to be an effective form of therapy that actually works. Yes, it can be a little awkward meeting someone for the first time online, but In today’s day and age you’re more used to online interactions than you think. You do this every time you do a teleconference for your work, contact someone via Craigslist or e-Bay, or even when you FaceTime a friend/family member. So when you do online counseling, you’ll be surprised how comfortable you feel. This is especially so if you have a counselor who is trained in online counseling. We know how to help you feel comfortable and help you talk about the important things so you can get the help you need.

After the initial trepidation of meeting someone for the first time wears off and you start discussing things with your counselor, you’ll see that your counseling is working and you’re starting to see things improve. You’ll feel comfortable with the counseling and especially appreciate the changes that you are seeing and feeling.

Online Counseling has Advantages

As a counselor, I see a lot of clients who have to postpone their appointments because they’re just too busy to make it in for regular visits. Sometimes they even have to cancel altogether because their work schedule is just too unpredictable or because they travel a lot. And if you’re a couple, it makes it even harder to manage two peoples’ schedule’s and get you both int he same place at the same time. I get it. People are busy. That’s where online counseling can really come in handy. You can do online counseling anywhere there’s a reliable internet connection – even at the park. Which is really great if you travel a lot or if you want to do an appointment during your lunch break. It also cuts down on travel time so you can squeeze an appointment in without having to cut into your schedule for travel time.

Online Counseling is Secure and Confidential

Online counseling services use top notch encrypted security measures to make sure that your session cannot be ‘spied’ on and that no data from your session is stored anywhere. This ensures that your counseling is secure and confidential. Just make sure that your counselor is using secure online counseling services and not the same ones that you use when you talk to your grandparents like Skype of Facetime. These are good programs for their own right but they’re not good for online counseling. They’re not encrypted and they’re actually more glitchy than services made specifically for online counseling.

Online counseling is a great resource if you’re looking for counseling while staying in the comfort of your own home. And it’s a great way to make sure you still get the mental and relational help you need during social distancing. If you’re looking for a good online counselor, give us a call here at The Marriage and Family Clinic. Our counselors are specially trained to do online counseling in order to make sure you have a smooth experience. We also use the latest top-encrypted services to make sure your counseling is secure and confidential.
