While fall is the perfect season for football, friends, and foliage, it’s also a great time for family. School has begun so finding time to spend together can be challenging but it should be a priority. Curb your child’s cell phone obsession and get them outdoors … or at least off the couch! If you’re looking for inspiration, we can help. Read on for suggestions on great ways to ring in fall with your family.
Savor the Season
There are certain things that are quintessentially autumn – like apple picking, hitting pumpkin patches, and simply enjoying the changing leaves. So savor the season by packing a picnic and going to see the fall foliage. Gather the whole family for a day of apple picking, and then bob for apples and/or make an incredible pie like Grandma used to make. Pumpkin patches these days are so much more than a lot for those infamous orange gourds. Many of them offer rides, slides, face painting, and more. This is also a great time of year to get your animal fix at a farm, and some will even let you milk the cows … if that’s your thing. If you live in a part of the U.S. that has harsh winters, you know that the chance to get outdoors before the chill hits is one you should definitely take advantage of, and the memories created will last a lifetime.
All Hail Halloween
Halloween is the perfect family holiday, as everyone can get in on the fun. Even the grumpiest of teens and tweens surely love this festive time of year. Gather the troops for a day of transforming your humble abode into a ghoulishly great haunted house. While the actual decorating is a blast, the real fun will be the big reveal as trick or treaters come around to your house of homemade horrors. BOO!
If you prefer to get the family out and about on Halloween, start thinking now about your costumes. From the Human Hot Dog and the Space Cadet to the Skeleton and the Unicorn, there’s one to fit each persona in your fam. Beginning to look now will save you time in the future and keep you from that last minute trip you don’t want to do when you have everything else going on.
Get Your Game On
Family game night, anyone? This is a concept that’s been around for generations, and for good reason—it’s good, clean fun. And as a therapist, I can’t tell you all the good benefits this will have. Get the competitive juices flowing with anything from Trivial Pursuit to Charades. Your techie kids will surely love that there’s even an app for that these days. Pictionary is always a great option, or you could take things really old school with Monopoly, Sorry, or Operation. Any which way you cut it, family game night is the perfect way to bring everyone together to join in bonding and laughter (and competition, of course). If you’re tired of the same old games in your house, check into some new games from FamilyGamesAmerica.com.
If you want to stick with the game idea but are more of an outdoors family or want to get out before the weather starts turning cold , head out for some bowling, hit up an arcade, or take in some mini golf. If you want more ideas you can go to sites like LivingSocial and look for things in our area. They also usually have coupons/discounts for them, too.
Get Your Fall Fitness On
You know what they say—the family who sweats together, stays together. Well, we’re not actually sure that’s a saying but it should be. Exercise is one of the best ways to keep your kids healthy during the school year. Get everyone outside on a crisp fall day for a game of two-hand touch football. Tackle football could end in tears and should likely be avoided. If you have access to some hiking trails, grab the family pooch and hit the path. With the ever-changing colors, family photos taken at this time of year are something to behold. Don’t forget your camera!
